We’re Loud. We’re Proud. And We’re Geeks.

Written by Laura McConnell

Do you consider a full set of Stormtrooper armor less constricting than an evening gown?

Do you think that a Starfleet dress uniform is more formal than a tuxedo?

Do you know when to don Muggle clothes versus dress robes versus school robes?

Is your coat kind of a brownish color, and not because it was on sale?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, KNTR has just the event for you: the inaugural Kids Need to Read Geek Prom at Phoenix Comicon.  That’s right, a prom.  But you can forget all that cliché stuff your mind conjures up when you think of high school dances (or even the Yule Ball).  This prom is shaping up to be nothing of the sort.  Read on for more info, true believers!

Kids Need to Read is proud to present its first annual Geek Prom, brought to you by Bookmans and occurring Saturday, May 29, 2010 as part of Phoenix Comicon (10:00 PM – 2:00 AM).  We welcome every Star Wars fan, Trekkie (or Trekker, if you prefer), wizard, witch, Ringer, Whedonite, gamer, or just plain dork to come party with us.  We can’t wait to see who shows up at our shindig, and it seems that our excitement is infectious!  Bookmans even designed a logo and poster for the event that are sure to make our intentions clear.  After all, if we build it, they will come – but only if we tell them about it! Every good party needs signage, and so without further ado, here they are!  The first annual Kids Need to Read Geek Prom logo . . .

See?  I told you Stormtroopers were welcome!  So if white armor and blaster rifles are your thing, come on down!  Just don’t blast anyone, okay?  That applies to you Jedis, as well.  Bring your lightsabers, but no cutting off arms!  You witches and wizards stay away from the Unforgivable Curses, too!  Instead, try your hand at Rock Band.  Or strut your stuff in the geek dance contest.  Or enter the Fashion Geek-tacular costume contest.  There will be plenty to do, no matter your inclination.  We’ll even have a special section for wallflowers!  Come as you are or in your best geek apparel!  This prom is all about inclusion, and you might even end up being crowned Geek Prom King or Queen!  You never know!

So come on out and have some fun while helping Kids Need to Read!  We thank you in advance and send our heartfelt appreciation to Bookmans for all of their help with this event, as well.  And now, if I may, there is just one more thing to say.  One last bit of advice from this old band geek to those of you lucky enough to attend this prom.  Remember, geeks, be excellent to each other.  And party on, dudes!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
