Phoenix Comicon Spotlight: Author/Illustrator Steven Riley Set to Entertain Kids

Written by Denise Gary

Some people are natural-born performers.  They don’t need a script; they don’t need encouragement.  All they need is an audience.  Author/illustrator Steven Riley is just such a person.  He has a magical talent for entertaining kids, but his “entertainment” doubles as comedic teaching.  All children know is they are having fun.  If you are an adult who is fortunate enough to catch one of Steven’s presentations, you will find yourself laughing and forgetting that you are not one of the kids.

Kids Need to Read will be hosting two of Steven’s wonderfully engaging programs for children (and the young-at-heart) at Phoenix Comicon on Saturday, May 29th, and Sunday, May 30th.  The author and illustrator of the Little Ty Cooney National Wonder Series of children’s adventure books is committed to the cause of childhood literacy, and gives his time and talent to Kids Need to Read whenever possible.

On Saturday, kids will be swept away by Steven’s true, death defying story about Yosemite, a bike ride, and a cave that will blow their mind . . . and that is just the beginning.  On Sunday, Kids Need to Read presents Steven’s interactive exploration of creation and storytelling, suitable for kids of all ages with active imaginations.  Come and literally be a part of the hilarity while experiencing the audience’s story springing to life before your eyes, Steven Riley style.  If you have kids, you will not want to miss these incredible programs!

Saturday, May 29, 12:00-1:00 PM, Room CC150 (free program)
Sunday, May 30, 12:00-1:00 PM, Room CC153 (free program)

On Saturday evening, catch Steven singing a novel song as our newly crowned King and Queen of Geekdom walk the catwalk at the first annual Kids Need to Read Geek Prom & Rock Band Party.  The cheese factor will be high at this uniquely Geek-tastic event sponsored by Bookmans and hosted by Phoenix ComiconClick here to read more about the Kids Need to Read Geek Prom at Phoenix Comicon.

To further support Kids Need to Read, Steven has generously offered to contribute $3.00 to the foundation from the sales of each of his Little Ty Cooney National Wonder Series of books during Phoenix Comicon!  Please see Steven at his table in Exhibitor Hall.

Due to KNTR supporter inquiries, Steven has agreed to extend this fundraiser from now until Phoenix Comicon for those who cannot attend the convention.  Please write to Steven at steve@tycooney.com for further information.  Be sure to mention that you are interested in contributing to Kids Need to Read through the purchase of his books.

Thank you so much for your constant support, Steven!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
