Presenting the Kids Need to Read 2016 Calendar Cover Art

The Kids Need to Read 2016 wall calendar is presented by

Life Alert Emergency Response

As we get ready to introduce the Kids Need to Read 2016 wall calendar at Tucson Comic-Con and Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest, we proudly present the cover art for your enjoyment. The new calendar is immediately available for donations in the Kids Need to Read online store, as well. Every piece of art we received from each of our twelve calendar artists was inspiring, making the effort to choose just one for the cover a difficult challenge. Each artist was instructed to incorporate a book or books into their illustration to highlight our mission. What we received was beautifully imaginative art as unique as each artist’s style and perception.

The Seas of Imagination, by Sarrah Wilkinson, artist and resident dragon fanatic of Red Nebula Studios, was chosen to represent the spectacular artistry contained within the Kids Need to Read calendar. Dynamic and impeccably produced, The Seas of Imagination was selected for how well it illustrates the Kids Need to Read tagline, “Inspiring Imagination,” and for the emphasis it places on the power of the written word.  Sarrah sums up her vision best:

Books inspire and inform. They can take you to faraway places or allow you to discover the magic in your own backyard. There’s no greater treasure than a good collection to read!

This is Sarrah’s second calendar contribution, having created The Treasure of Generations for the KNTR 2015 calendar.

The remaining eleven calendar illustrations are all unique and equally inspiring. We thank all of the Kids Need to Read calendar artists for their dedication to the cause of childhood literacy, and for honoring our organization with their valuable time and talent:

We are immensely grateful to our calendar sponsor, Life Alert Emergency Response, whose generosity over the past six years has ensured that 100% of the funds generated by calendar sales will be used to further our mission. Also, we extend our deep appreciation to Dawn Russo for her continuing support of the calendar project throughout the years.

In addition to the calendar, Kids Need to Read produces fine art prints of the artists’ contributions. Currently, the KNTR 2016 calendars, as well as a selection of fine art prints, are available for purchase in the Kids Need to Read online store. Calendars and fine art prints will also be available at the KNTR booth at Tucson Comic-con (November 6–8, 2015) and Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest (December 4–6, 2015). Some of the calendar artists will be in attendance at the conventions, so make a donation for a 2016 calendar and get them signed by these fine artists. They are perfect for libraries and classrooms—shining a bright light on literacy all year long!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
