Year of the Dragon*Con

Written by Denise Gary

Dragon*Con is coming up in one month (September 4-7, 2009) and Kids Need to Read is getting very excited!  Thanks to money raised by Big Damn Fan Films’ Facebook Cause and the welcoming arms of Austin Browncoats, KNTR will be at the convention to raise funds and spread the word about our mission.

Please stop by to visit with us and our pal, our founder, the one and only PEEJ – PJ Haarsma.  PJ will spend time on Saturday in the KNTR/Austin Browncoats booth to sign copies of his The Softwire novels.  All profits from the sales of his made-of-awesome sci-fi books will go to KNTR.  So please give him a slap on the back for us, will ya?  And if you tell him a funny joke, we’ll give you a special prize for helping us keep our founder entertained (or tortured)!

Every kid who stops by the KNTR booth will receive a FREE Highlights for Children magazine (while quantities last).  These excellent magazines are wonder-tools for getting kids to read, so bring your kids by to pick one up.  Kids need to read, and we have cool stuff to get ‘em to read!!!

We will also have copies of The Kids Need to Read Foundation 2010 wall calendar ready to purchase.  Since our calendar was paid for by many generous supporters, the entire purchase price will help KNTR donate new kids books to under-funded schools and libraries across the United States.  Each month of the calendar features a beautiful Allen Patrou photograph of a kid immersed in the world of books, as well as a compelling quote from some of our great Kids Need to Read authors.  Hey, have PJ sign one of these for you too!

The wonderful folks at Big Damn Fan Films have invited us to be guests on the Browncoats: Redemption panel at 11:30 on Sunday morning.  We’ll bring PJ along.  You can ask him about goofing up a prank on the Browncoats: Redemption set and at how many lumens does Brad Pitt glow.  If you want to get him agitated, ask him about healthcare reform!

Oh, there is one more exciting “little” thing to mention … but wait, we can’t yet!  We must keep it super-secret for now, but it is “super-cool” (exact quote of Nathan Fillion) and super-irresistible.  Stay tuned!

We might even come up with more fun stuff between now and September 4th, because all of us at KNTR cannot resist having fun!  Come have a blast with KNTR, PJ, Austin Browncoats and Big Damn Fan Films at Dragon*Con 2009!  You’ll be helping us help kids succeed through the light of literacy.

I am off to practice my joke-telling!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
