Kids Need to Read is very excited to announce that Thunderbirds Charities has awarded a $5,000 grant to help fund books for The Page Coach, KNTR’s mobile conveyor of literary treasure to children living in low socioeconomic neighborhoods of the Mesa/Phoenix metropolitan area and throughout Arizona. The mobile outreach unit enables KNTR to connect with children at various organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs, transitional homes, recreation centers, libraries, schools, and special events. We are ever delighted to see the happiness on the faces of the children when they receive books and story times and other literacy resources when we arrive in The Page Coach. Many express their love of books and reading to us; others simply give us wide smiles, too shy to speak.

The Thunderbirds Charities purpose is to distribute funds generated by the Waste Management Phoenix Open to assist children and families to improve the quality of life in our communities. Since its creation, Thunderbirds Charities has awarded over $100 million to programs that support at-risk youth & families, community outreach/quality of life, education, improving the lives of the physically and mentally challenged, or works to eliminate domestic violence/homelessness and poverty. Kids Need to Read sincerely thanks Thunderbird Charities for supporting The Page Coach and KNTR’s efforts to encourage children to read. We are extremely excited to continue to deliver dreams and inspire imagination among the children who will benefit from this generous contribution.

You, too, can support KNTR directly by pledging during Birdies for Charity at the Waste Management Phoenix Open! Typically, a one cent pledge per birdie results in a donation of about $15.00. Straight donations are also accepted. We need your support, so please find more information at Birdies for Charity and kindly make a pledge to help KNTR provide literacy support for disadvantaged children!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
