The Last Thursday in November

Written by Laura McConnell

It’s November. For the Northern half of our fair planet, that means that leaves are falling and days are getting shorter. A brisk nip of coolness is beginning to hint at colder days to come. And in the United States, it means a major holiday is almost here.

The last Thursday in November is the day Americans set aside for football, turkey with all the trimmings, and pumpkin pie. But I think there’s something else that’s supposed to happen on this holiday, too. If I could only remember what it was! Oh! I remember now! Turkey Day has another name – Thanksgiving. Yes, that’s it. Thanksgiving is a day set aside long ago for us to remember our blessings and give thanks for them.

How appropriate, then, that Kids Need to Read has several people to thank today for their part in making our beautiful KNTR 2010 calendar project a huge success! In addition to the photographer who captured the images and the children who modeled for them, several businesses and venues donated props, time, and supplies to this project or gave Kids Need to Read use of their location for photo shoots. Without them, the KNTR calendar would never have become a reality. These calendar providers are truly a blessing!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
