Stop Badgering The Monkeys!

Those wacky Space Monkeys are back in the 25th Kids Need to Read Charity Auction.  These collectible charmers are 15” of brown, plush cuteness wearing a shirt with “Terrify’n Space Monkey” hand painted on the front by our fabulous KNTR kid, Kelly.  They are also proudly boasting a Kids Need to Read mini-button.This week we are extremely fortunate to be able to offer a Monkey with the signature of actor Mark Sheppard – surely one of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood!  Not only did he create the role of Badger, that mercenary scoundrel with the charming Cockney accent in Firefly, but he can also be seen in recurring roles on Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman, Medium, and 24, as well as guest spots on a host of other shows.

We are grateful to Mark Sheppard for signing our Terrify’n Space Monkey, to Sean Harry of Starfury USA for assisting our organization in acquiring signatures, and to Marty Dwyer and Denise Gary for donating the space monkeys to benefit Kids Need to Read.

Bidding begins immediately and opens at $40.00.  Bids will be accepted until Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 10pm ET/ 9pm CT/ 7pm PT.

Place your bids now in the comments section of this blog.  Bids must be placed here to be considered.  The winner will be notified by PM and will have 5 days to donate the high bid directly to the Kids Need to Read website at http://kidsneedtoread.org (or you can click on “KIDSNEEDTOREAD.ORG HOME” at the top of this page. Click on “Donate Now”; then click on “Make a Donation”.).  Your Mark Sheppard Space Monkey will be mailed to you as soon as your donation is received.

All of Kids Need to Read’s proceeds for February will go to support the Odessa Brown Clinic in Seattle, Washington.  Through the Reach Out and Read © Program (ROR), the Odessa Brown Clinic can give new books to children between the ages of six months through five years at each well child check.  Once a child turns six, they are no longer able to provide new books through ROR and rely solely on the generous support of individuals, companies and organizations.  Kids Need to Read would like to help supply books for the clinic’s older children not served by ROR.  The proceeds from this auction will help Kids Need to Read, the charity project founded by author PJ Haarsma and actor Nathan Fillion, achieve that goal.

Bidding begins now!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
