Sister, Sister – A KNTR Calendar Update and Sneak Peak

When I was a little girl, my sister and I shared a room.

Every night, one of my parents would read us two girls a short book.  My sister always wanted Cinderella, while I continuously clamored for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Now, it seems to me that Cinderella won out most of the time, but even if my sister did get her book more often, I suppose I can forgive her.

After all, I write a fair bit these days, and my earliest memory of forming letters with my hands does not involve a keyboard.  Instead, a crayon, a piece of colored paper, and my sister are the main players.  I clearly remember my sister teaching a very small me to write the word “CAT” in red crayon on construction paper one night after we were supposed to be in bed.

In fact, that’s the only memory I have of learning to write.  So, yes, my sister can be forgiven for constantly subjecting me to tales of princes and glass slippers.  That’s a small price to pay for being able to write this blog now – and who knows where I’d be if not for that night with a crayon?

I haven’t thought about that night in years, but it came rushing back to me just now with a vengeance.

Why?

Because the Kids Need to Read Calendar Project is in full swing and three sisters have stepped to the forefront of our cause.  Volunteer professional photographer Allen Patrou of Apatrou Photography in Phoenix, Arizona, has been hard at work these past few months.  He’s already produced ten of the twelve images that KNTR will be using in this work of art.  In this video, Allen gives us a sneak peak of a Kids Need to Read photo shoot.  It features three sisters who aren’t shy about showing off their love for reading.  These three darling girls, wearing gorgeous dresses designed by Strasburg and donated by Dillard’s Children’s Clothing, will melt your hearts!

3-Sisters Inspiring Imagination Photo Shoot

Not every child in this world is as lucky as my sister and I.  Some don’t have anyone to read to them, and some simply don’t have access to books to read!

The Kids Need to Read Foundation wants to change that, and you can help.  This calendar project is an important fundraiser for KNTR, and any monies collected will help get books to kids who need them.  Let’s get another generation reading together!

If you’d like to be involved in this project, you can become a sponsor of our calendar by making a donation to Kids Need to Read by July 15th.  Any individual, business, or group who donates $300 to KNTR will be featured on the special sponsor page inside the calendar (including logo, if available).  If sponsorship isn’t possible for you, consider purchasing one or more of these calendars to proudly display in your home or office.  Kids Need to Read plans to sell the calendar nationally in the KNTR eBay store, at independent bookstores, and at several conventions.  Individuals can also help sell these beautiful works of art to benefit Kids Need to Read and their own local libraries!

We here at KNTR are very excited about this project and we hope that you will join us in supporting reading and photographic art with a sponsorship or by purchasing one of these calendars.  To become a KNTR 2010 calendar sponsor, or to inquire about selling the calendars for Kids Need to Read, please write to info@kidsneedtoread.org.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
