Share Our Libraries

Kids Need to Read is proud to introduce our newest program, “Share Our Libraries.” Building on the legacy of the retired “Grow Our Libraries” program, formerly run by Gary and Tina Mlodzik, “Share Our Libraries” is dedicated to improving literacy access through libraries for the communities they serve.

“Share Our Libraries” will focus on supporting libraries, particularly in rural areas, across the country. This support includes refreshing children’s collections, bolstering summer and afterschool community programs, and developing a special initiative to connect youth leaders with community literacy efforts.

Reading is a Life Skill

Our “Reading is a Life Skill” initiative is designed to enhance library collections by providing new and current books on career choices, social-emotional learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), and financial literacy.

Books with these themes are crucial for helping children and teens:

  • Explore various professions
  • Understand the educational paths required
  • Make informed decisions about their futures

However, these books often become outdated faster than other genres, are more expensive, and are typically less popular than most fiction. This makes them a strain on limited library budgets.

Page Turners: Youth Literacy Champions

Led by Advisory Council member Tiffany Ellington, the Page Turners: Youth Literacy Champions program is set to launch in late 2025. This initiative aims to connect youth leaders from organizations such as Miss America, Scouting America, and others with their local libraries.

Youth leaders will collaborate with their local libraries and Kids Need to Read to plan and implement community literacy events. These events will provide libraries with books and resources to enhance their collections, benefiting the entire community.
