Nathan Fillion Makes a Difference!

Written by Laura McConnell

It seems that in Hollywood these days, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.  Usually the loudmouths and bad boys get the press – but not always.  This past weekend, that trend was reversed by USA WEEKEND.

USA WEEKEND is a Sunday supplemental magazine that is distributed in many newspapers.  Its cover story this week is Make A Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of service.  Make A Difference Day has been “celebrated” on the fourth Saturday of October for the better part of the past two decades and this year is no exception.  USA WEEKEND urges everyone to help out by volunteering in their own neighborhoods this coming weekend.

To help get their message across, USA WEEKEND has enlisted the help of more than sixty television shows on all four major networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC.  In the coming week, ads encouraging service and volunteering will run in every sort of programming.  They’ve also harnessed the power of several Hollywood stars – including ABC’s hottest crime-fighting novelist, Rick Castle!  Nathan Fillion, co-founder of Kids Need to Read and star of Castle, is featured right on the cover of the magazine!

Inside the magazine, Nathan talks about his own volunteering efforts with Kids Need to Read and what makes it all worthwhile.  He says that “if you can teach a kid to read, he can do anything.”

Kids Need to Read could not agree more and we are excited to be mentioned in this national publication!  Won’t you join USA WEEKEND, KNTR, and countless others around the nation this coming weekend and beyond?  Volunteer and make a difference!

Tis the Season

This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
