KNTR Donates Ninety Books to Kids Shelter

Kids Need to Read receives many messages from people telling us that books helped them survive their childhood. This knowledge inspired our recent gift of ninety new books to the Austin Shelter for Women and Children in Austin, Texas. These books were donated to honor the Austin Browncoats, a nonprofit organization that is an enthusiastic supporter of our foundation. It was because of their efforts on our behalf that we sought out a shelter in the Austin community to contribute to that best suited our mission of getting books into the hands of children who need them.

Austin Shelter for Women and Children is part of The Salvation Army and provides refuge to homeless women and children. The books will be distributed as gifts to the many children finding assistance at the shelter, hopefully making them feel more welcome and giving them something they can do together with their parents. Cara Luptak-Peterson, Child and Family Therapist at Austin Shelter for Women and Children, sent us the following message:

I received the books yesterday, and they are simply wonderful! I’m so excited to be able to share them with the children staying at our shelter. I appreciate you sending a wide variety of books to us, as we have children of many different ages here. We should be able to provide one to each child! Thank you so much for providing our children this wonderful gift that they may enjoy for years to come!

Kids Need to Read sincerely hopes our books will be a joy, inspiration and light for the many children finding a place to stay at the shelter.

Tis the Season

This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
