Kids Need to Read and Highlights for Children: Partners for Literacy

Written by Denise Gary

Kids Need to Read has a new partner in our mission to open the world of literacy to kids – Highlights For Children, Inc. When I was first contacted by Highlights, I was flooded with warm childhood memories of reading Highlights for Children over four decades ago.  I remember grabbing hold of the magazine and eagerly opening it up to Hidden Pictures before moving on to everything else.  (Yes, Hidden Pictures is still a mainstay of the venerable magazine.)

Now, Kids Need to Read has joined forces with Highlights for Children to bring more quality reading opportunities to the children we serve.  Each of the public and elementary school libraries we donate books to will receive free copies of Highlights High Five and Highlights for Children to give to each of their age-appropriate patrons.  So that these children will be able to continue to enjoy the magazines throughout the year, the libraries will also be given a one-year gift subscription to both magazines.

Kids Need to Read is thrilled to partner with such a highly respected magazine – one that has been devoted to the development of literacy and high values in children for over sixty years.  The success of their fun, irresistible monthly publication proves that kids love to read if you just put something well-written and appealing into their hands.

Kids Need to Read offers a “high five” to Highlights for Children for their role in promoting childhood literacy rates over the past six decades, as well as their generosity to the KNTR kids!

Tis the Season

This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
