Helping Children to Get Lost In Books

It’s really nice of you to encourage kids to read. It really does bring you into a whole other world. —Fifth grade student, dorm resident and Kids Need to Read book beneficiary, Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Community School, Navajo Nation

Greetings!

With simplicity and clarity, an elementary school student verbalized the importance of reading in a letter to Kids Need to Read after receiving books from our passionate staff. The child quoted above, living in a rural school dorm, clearly values the opportunities to experience the world beyond her reach provided through books. The gift meant enough to move her to express such feelings directly to us in a letter. What this student has so profoundly discovered is the ability to dream through the written word and learn of the possibilities beyond through the miracle of reading! What if relevant books were not available to her? What would her future hold? Books are power tools that allow children to dream and to accomplish those dreams.

I love to read books. When you came I was so excited. —Third grade student

There is perhaps no greater equalizer in the early years of intellectual development than that of education through reading. Kids Need to Read has supported over a decade of literacy by providing new books and reading initiatives to children and communities nationwide through its flagship program, From Our Shelves to Yours; mobile outreach vehicle, The Page Coach; and public library outreach program, Grow Your Library. The impact these programs have made on children’s lives nationwide is significant, and we continue to address the severe absence of books across the United States through partnerships and the support of individuals like you.

I wish you can come back again. —Fourth grade student

Kids Need to Read represents opportunity at its purest, by encouraging children to discover for themselves the joy of reading and the power of a literate mind. Will you help us continue our work on behalf of children with little or no access to books? Whether you give $10 or $1,000, your gift will help us go “back again” to provide books and literacy initiatives to the children who most desperately need our services.

I think [Kids Need to Read] . . . cares about all kinds of different people. . . . —Sixth grade student

Yes, we care, and the children can discern how deeply we care. What more powerful outreach can there be? What more significant gift can they receive than a literate future? Please support Kids Need to Read with your 100% tax deductible gift and we will continue caring, going back again, creating excitement, and opening other worlds for every child we are able to reach.

Get lost in a book!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
