Ah, the glee of Phoenix Comicon!  This convention is not to be missed!  As Phoenix Comicon’s sponsored charity, Kids Need to Read will be the beneficiary of several amazing events.  Anyone who is familiar with Kids Need to Read knows that we do not believe in putting on any event that isn’t FUN! Here is the intel on some of our exciting plans:

  • Geek out and rock Saturday night away with Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, and Aaron Douglas at the first annual Geek Prom & Celebrity Rock Band Party! Expect fun, activities and prizes! Celebrate your inner Geek by facing off in the clash of Celebrity Rock Band, attempt to claim victory in the Geek dance-off, have your stylin’ photo taken underneath the Geek Prom Arch, and vie to be crowned Geek Prom King and Queen in this Geek-tacular event! There will be food and drink cash bars available. Entry fee is only $5.00 (extra charge for photographs) and all proceeds will benefit Kids Need to Read. Dress code is Geek casual or formal – real Geeks won’t even need a costume!
  • Kids Need to Read is all about the kids, and we will host a hysterically funny program for kids (and adults) of all ages on Saturday and Sunday. Steven Riley, author/Illustrator of the Ty Cooney Series of children’s adventure books, will present his highly entertaining program that will have everyone smiling and laughing, no matter their age. The kids will never suspect they are being taught lessons about creating stories through Steven’s clever, interactive program! If you have kids, you will not want to miss Steven Riley!
  • Sunday brings fun in the form of Star Wars games conducted by the five Star Wars groups attending the convention (Rebel Legion, 501st, Mando Mercs, R2 Builders, ISO). Think Bounty Hunters and Smugglers’ Runs, with proceeds going to fight the dark side of illiteracy!
  • Don’t miss the Kids Need to Read table in the Exhibitor Hall. We will have silent auctions, Terrify’n Space Monkeys, and some of our great Browncoats: Redemption friends will be hanging around to tell you about their charity film, which will partially benefit KNTR.

Get yourselves to Phoenix Comicon and have some fun with Kids Need to Read!  It all happens May 27-30, 2010 at Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
