Educational Climate Change

Written by Erin Casey

Schools around the country are suffering from budget cuts these days.  Libraries seem to be taking the brunt of these cuts, and new books are a rare treat for many schools.

Maritime Industries Academy #431 in Baltimore, Maryland serves 600 students, among them many reluctant readers, plus, a self-contained program for emotionally disturbed students.  They also have a book club partnership with a local business that focuses on high risk young men.  The forty-nine books Kids Need to Read donated to Maritime Industries Academy #431 were tailored specifically for these children’s needs.

Jason Mabee, the media specialist at Maritime Industries Academy, says the school is “committed to changing the educational climate for our students by creating access to high interest reading materials.”  Kids Need to Read aims to achieve this goal all across the country.
