California Browncoats Announce Fundraiser for KNTR

Serenity: Better Days Exclusive

The California Browncoats have announced that they will be selling copies of a Limited Edition Serenity: Better Days #1 comic book from Dark Horse Comics at San Diego Comic-Con International. The convention will take place July 23rd – 27th, 2008 in San Diego, California. This comic will feature a California Browncoat/Comic-Con exclusive cover and is limited to 5,000 copies. The cover is the pencil art version of the rare Dark Horse 100 cover done by series artist Will Conrad. The California Browncoats will donate 100% of the profits from the sale of this comic to Kids Need to Read.

Thank you for supporting Kids Need to Read through the purchase of this special edition comic. Your contribution will be used to bring the magic of books into the lives of children. – Nathan Fillion and PJ Haarsma

The exclusive comic will sell for $10.00 and at least 500 copies are guaranteed available every day of the convention, including Preview Night. Even if you only make it to Comic-Con for one day, you’ll be able to get your hands on this special edition.

Virtual Comic-Con Purchasing

If you are not attending Comic-Con, but want to get this special comic, the California Browncoats are planning an exciting opportunity for you. Starting at 6 PM PST on July 23rd, they will have multiple auctions on eBay starting at the convention price. All proceeds after costs and fees will be donated to Kids Need to Read. If any of the comics have a winning bid over $10, CABC will donate that money to KNTR as well. The auctions will run only during the five days of Comic-Con, making them a “virtual exclusive”. Bookmark the CABC eBay page for the big event.

Thank You

All of us at Kids Need to Read are excited for the opportunity to contribute to the California Browncoats fundraising efforts at Comic-Con 2008. Our organization will be providing additional items to help raise money at the Browncoat booth. Many of us will be there volunteering, including Sci-Fi author PJ Haarsma. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to work alongside the California Browncoats and thank them for making The Kids Need to Read Foundation the beneficiary of their hard work.

Kids Need to Read would like to join the California Browncoats in thanking “the sponsors who provided funds and Dark Horse Comics for their dedication, support, and effort in the production of this comic. Without them, this comic would not have been possible.” Additionally, Kids Need to Read thanks PJ Haarsma and Nathan Fillion for their constant support of Kids Need to Read and their extra dedication to the work being done this year at San Diego Comic-Con International.

When I first traveled across North America to promote The Softwire, my initial excitement quickly turned to dismay when I witnessed the lack of book funds available to schools and libraries. Children would follow me into the parking lot after my presentation begging for a book they couldn’t afford while teachers and librarians scrambled to find funds for even a single copy. I came across many a teacher who took the money out of his/her own pocket just so the kids could have the book in their library. It was this disturbing trend that prompted me to establish the Kids Need to Read project as a way to fight back. It is our dream to fill library shelves with great books so that no child lacks for amazing stories to inspire their imaginations. – PJ Haarsma

Growing up, my parents managed to show me the importance of reading without cramming it down my throat. A difficult task, I’m sure. It breaks my heart to think that there are kids out there, ready to have their imaginations lit on fire, excited and wanting to read, and facing naked shelves in their school or local libraries. Rather than complain or wait till the system stops failing our nation’s children, this is a matter I feel we must take into our own hands. There are children, right now, waiting– wanting to read. What shall we tell them?

I support Kids Need To Read because it fosters a desire to learn, the process of self-improvement, and the chance for children’s minds to grow. What will you do? – Nathan Fillion

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
