Every autumn, Firefly fans across the country don their brown coats, tight pants, and pink layer cake dresses in celebration of the annual Browncoat Ball. This year the ball was hosted in Kids Need to Read’s corner of the world by the Arizona Browncoats. The group decided to add a new element to the ball: a charitable contribution. Although Browncoat groups the world over dedicate their activities to raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for various causes, the Ball itself has always been purely a get together. This time Kids Need to Read was the lucky recipient of the Arizona Browncoats’ shiny new idea! Funds were raised through raffles at the event and the director of the 2013 Browncoat Ball, Cindy Pickard, delivered a check to our office last week for an incredible $1,050! Check out the following video for a chuckle over our surprise at receiving such a cunning gift!

We thank the attendees of the 2013 Browncoat Ball so very much for their kindness. The gift came just as we were fulfilling a multitude of book requests and wishing for additional funds for shipping. Serendipity and Serenity! Thanks also to Cindy Pickard for everything she did to make this happen for Kids Need to Read! And of course, thank you to our generous Browncoat friends here in Arizona and the world over. Your constant support sustains us . . . and makes the children smile!
