Book Sale Appreciation

It may have been last minute, but the Kids Need to Read used book sale was definitely a success.  Sequoia Charter Schools, who very generously lent us space in their gymnasium, was having a basketball tournament that day; and while basketball and books are rarely put together in the same sentence, on February 6th they went together like peanut butter and jelly.  Many curious ball players and spectators stopped by our tables and found a book or two that lit up their faces at a price that couldn’t be beat (all our books were priced from $1–$8).

Even a contingency from Phoenix Comicon – Joe Boudrie and Brandy Kuschel – stopped by! They’ve done so much to make Phoenix Comicon an awesome event all around and for Kids Need to Read in particular, so we were thrilled with their participation!

Our KNTR volunteers weren’t alone in making this sale a success.  We were aided by Kathy Casey, Tammy Richardson (Sequoia’s lovely librarian), and Collin, our pint-sized helper.  Tammy devoted a lot of her time helping us set up this event and showing Denise (KNTR’s Executive Director) Sequoia’s library – she has done a wonderful job of making their library a great place for kids.  Tammy was also sweet enough to buy and donate table cloths to make our space prettier!

There was even time for some silliness.  Customers were friendly and open for a laugh, and as Denise points out, so were we:

We hope those weren’t meant for us!! (Rest assured, we did clean up after ourselves.)

KNTR raised over $250 dollars at the sale, which will go toward a supplementary donation to Children First Academy – Phoenix.  We have given books to this school for Phoenix area homeless children in the past, but they are such a worthy school with a small library, and we are proud to help them grow!

Kids Need to Read is so grateful to everyone who helped with this sale, including Tammy Richardson for going above and beyond what was necessary, the many kind supporters who donated such great books to KNTR, and to those who purchased books.  Your purchase not only gives you something new to read, but does so for many children too!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
