Ahoy Me Hearties! Kids Need to Read had an AMAZING adventure at the 2012 Arizona Renaissance Festival!

For the past two years (and many more to come) the festival has hosted a book drive for Kids Need to Read during Pirate Weekend.

Buccaneers, lads, and lasses abounded to help KNTR bring the gift of reading to many children in need. We collected 826 books during the two-day event! Shiver me timbers!

We are always thrilled to get such amazing support from the community, but it is especially exciting when we have children donating the books for other children in need. The smiles and excitement were infectious!

Kids Need to Read handed out Highlights magazines . . .

. . . Highlights High Five magazines . . .

. . . Cricket magazines . . .

. . . and Cicada magazines . . .

. . . as well as backpacks, bookmarks, and buttons.

Thank goodness we could keep those pirates from pillaging our plunder!

We are grateful to Highlights for Children and Carus Publishing for providing the magazines . . .

. . . and to Bookmans Entertainment Exchange for sponsoring the backpacks.

Kids Need to Read would like to thank the Arizona Renaissance Festival for their support, as well as all the families that donated books. We hope to see you all again next year! Until then, fair winds to all!

Tis the Season

This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
