Austin Browncoats: The Heart of Texas

Written by Denise Gary

You’ve heard the bragging a million times before, “Everything’s BIGGER in Texas!”  Since I have lived throughout the gigantic state of Texas, I can confidently say that this statement is not mere boasting; it is the gosh darn truth.  I am a Texan, sure, but I can back up my claim with facts:

* The Texas state capital building is taller than the national capital building in Washington, D.C.

* The San Jacinto Monument is taller than the Washington Monument.

* The largest Live Oak tree is located in Blanco, Texas.

* Austin Browncoats had the most successful Can’t Stop the Serenity screening in history, raising a whopping $19,633 at their 2009 Austin, Texas event.

How can you refute such stature?  Kids Need to Read received almost $6,000 from Austin Browncoats as a beneficiary of their Austin and San Antonio CSTS screenings.  I never dreamed they would raise so much for KNTR at these events.  How foolish of me – they are Texans, and Texans have big hearts to go along with their big personalities!  (I bet you thought I was going to say “…big hearts to go along with their big hair,” didn’t you?)

Naturally, being Texans, Austin Browncoats didn’t stop at $6,000.  They sent an additional $300 to help sponsor KNTR’s 2010 calendar project, as well.  Big!  Texans think BIG!

Kids Need to Read gives a gen-u-wine Texas-sized bow to Austin Browncoats.  Yep, that giant wall of wind you just felt was created by our Texan bows.  Now, I have heard tell that Palo Duro Canyon is second in size to Grand Canyon.  I reckon they weren’t using a properly calibrated Texas tape measure when they came up with that determination.  But Texans are friendly, so we’ll just let that one slide.

Now be sure to take part in Austin Browncoat’s Jayne Hat Knit-a-Thon at Dragon*Con this year.  You can make a pledge online or at their booth.  All proceeds go to Kids Need to Read.  You should see the size of Claudia’s Texas knittin’ needles!!!  They smoke through those dag-burn hats!  KNTR will be right there beside Austin Browncoats, so come say howdy at booths 1005 and 1007, September 4-7.

Why Austin Browncoats support Kids Need to Read:

Austin Browncoats work to end violence and discrimination worldwide.  We believe that one way to help make our dream a reality is by giving kids a proper education.  Kids Need To Read is not only an important charity, it is a required charity.  Our libraries and schools need to be prepared to take care of our youth.  They need to cultivate and stimulate the minds of tomorrow in order for those children to grow up making the best possible choices.  We are proud to be able to support Kids Need To Read and will continue to do so as long as the issue of literacy is still a concern.

Thanks, y’all!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
