A Thank You From Kids Need to Read

This year we have a lot to be thankful for.

We are excited to announce that during 2008, we donated more than 1,900 books valued at approximately $17,000. We were also fortunate to help with the placement of more than 3,000 books to the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library. Kids Need to Read sincerely hopes our books will bring joy and inspiration to those communities and help foster a lifelong love of reading in their children. These donations would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors and the generous contributions of countless individuals. Thank you.

Kids Need to Read is honored to have such dedicated and creative sponsors. This year’s fundraising events and projects included an exclusive, limited edition Serenity: Better Days comic, a Jayne hat knit-a-thon, a get KNTR to Dragon*Con 2009 campaign, and the limited edition Mal maquette currently available for preorder at QMx.

The California Browncoats, together with Dark Horse comics, developed the Limited Edition Serenity: Better Days #1 comic book featuring an exclusive cover limited to 5,000 copies. The cover is the pencil art version of the rare Dark Horse 100 cover done by series artist Will Conrad. The California Browncoats raised $10,565 during San Diego Comic-Con International. The remaining KNTR Serenity comics can be bought at the Kids Need to Read eBay store.

Among the many fundraising events sponsored by Austin Browncoats, the most unique was the Dragon*Con 2008 Jayne Hat Knit-a-thon. Claudia Drinovsky knitted 12 Jayne hats during Dragon*Con raising $1,000 for Kids Need to Read! Austin Browncoats have pledged to support Kids Need to Read at Dragon*Con 2009. We cannot wait to see what they come up with this year!

Big Damn Fan Films/Browncoats: Redemption is sponsoring an ongoing fundraiser through Facebook Causes to help “Get Kids Need to Read to Dragon*Con 2009”. Their goal is to raise $3,500 by February 11, 2009. The money will be used to provide a booth, marketing materials and appropriate signage for Kids Need to Read at Dragon*Con. Thank you to all those who have participated in this fundraiser so far; your donations will help us inform more people about our mission to put exciting new books into the hands of children! We look forward to attending Dragon*Con! For more information on the “Get Kids Need to Read to Dragon*Con 2009” fundraiser, please visit the Facebook Cause page at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/160749.

QMx is donating a portion of the proceeds from their upcoming limited-edition Mal maquette to Kids Need to Read. Named “I Aim to Misbehave”, this “Little Damn Hero” will be available in January 2009. The 4.5-inch resin statue is hand-painted and shows Mal with his gun drawn and browncoat billowing behind him. Only 1,000 “I Aim to Misbehave” limited-edition maquettes will be made. Read more and place your pre-order at QMx’s website.

This year we hosted our first annual Kids Need to Read Holiday Store through our eBay store. The Holiday Store boasted an impressive collection of unique items from books and DVDs to beauty products and action figures. It truly had something for everyone! We are pleased to announce we raised $2,170! A big thank you to all our holiday shoppers!

We would also like to thank each and every KNTR volunteer whose continued support and enthusiasm keeps Kids Need to Read moving forward! Thank you for an amazing year!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
