Comic Book — Shepherd Book, that is!

Enjoy the continuing adventures of our favorite crew of space-faring scallywags in the second comic book series set in the world of Firefly and Serenity. Just released this year, Serenity: Better Days is a 3-issue series from Dark Horse Comics, written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews, illustrated by Brazilian artist Will Conrad and colored by Michelle Madsen. The covers are by celebrated artist Adam Hughes, and just as in the first series Serenity: Those Left Behind, the cover art has an innovative twist. In this series each cover depicts three of the nine cast members, and the three issues line up side by side to form a portrait of the entire crew!

Kids Need to Read Charity Auctions presents Issue #2 of the Better Days series featuring the characters of Jayne, Book and Inara on the cover. Our copies are signed on the front by actor Ron Glass, beloved by Firefly fans as Shepherd Book – the gentle preacher with the mean right hook. In this issue the crew finds themselves fantasizing about how they will spend their share of an unexpected windfall. Are they going to live out their lives in wealth and ease? What do you think?

We have ten of these gems and are making them available for $60.00 each. This is your chance to own one of these rare collector’s items! You can use the following link to buy your copy while they last: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110257239932 . This sale will continue until June 2, 2000 or until they are all gone.

Our sincere thanks go to KNTR volunteer Beth for acquiring these signatures for Kids Need to Read and to Hub Conventions for making it possible. Money raised from these auctions is used to purchase books for under-funded schools and libraries, as well as for other literary organizations that provide books to disadvantaged children.

We are always looking for auction items! If you have something you would like to donate to Kids Need to Read, e-mail Debbie Brown at debbie@kidsneedtoread.org .

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
