His Scottish brogue defined ship engineers for an entire generation of television viewers. Now Kids Need to Read Charity Auctions offers an 8×10 color photo of stalwart, Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the engine room of the USS Enterprise. We are fortunate indeed to have our photo signed by the man who played him, the versatile actor James Doohan, who passed away in 2005.
Doohan’s facility with accents was legendary – he performed 8 different accents when auditioning for the role of Scotty! His acting and vocal talents earned him parts in more than 100 motion pictures and television series throughout his long career, and his voice work in the first Star Trek movie formed the basis for the Klingon language widely-used by Trekkies today.
Doohan will always be indelibly linked with his beloved character, Scotty. On the Enterprise, Scotty was the practical, hard-nosed engineer, whose hands-on engineering skills could always be counted on to save the day. In real life, James Doohan was one of the most accessible, warm and giving stars of the Star Trek franchise. As a testament to his abiding love for space travel, his ashes were launched into space on a suborbital flight in 2007.

All of Kids Need to Read’s proceeds for February will go to support the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle, Washington. Through the Reach Out and Read © Program (ROR), the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic can give new books to children between the ages of six months through five years at each well child check. Once a child turns six, they are no longer able to provide new books through ROR and rely solely on the generous support of individuals, companies and organizations. Kids Need to Read would like to help supply books for the clinic’s older children not served by ROR. The proceeds from this auction will help Kids Need to Read, the charity project founded by author PJ Haarsma and actor Nathan Fillion, achieve that goal.
