Geeks Unite for KNTR!

Written by Debbie Brown

To geek or not to geek? That is the question. We here at Kids Need to Read ALWAYS say geek! When Scott West (@hydeandgeek on Twitter) approached us with a geeky fundraising idea, we were all for it! Scott conducted the Hyde & Geek 36 hour Tweetathon on Twitter with all of the proceeds going to Kids Need to Read. He started his ordeal at 10:00 AM on August 3rd and ended at 10:00 PM on August 4th. Well armed with Red Bull and his Kids Need to Read cheering squad, Scott fought the overwhelming need to sleep and raised $1,120.00 for us . . . and then promptly passed out! What a trooper!

The great part about this fundraiser was that everyone could follow along and see just how much Scott was raising. There were some very kind comments left on his FirstGiving page as well. Some of our favorites were: “God bless KNTR!,” “Such a great cause! Kids + books = WIN!,” and “Opening a book opens a whole new world. Thank you for helping get books into the hands of children.” We could not have said it better ourselves.

Even geek-sites like Pink Raygun and Wired.com’s Geek Dad rallied by posting articles about Scott’s endeavor to help further our mission. Brian Truitt (@briantruitt), writer/editor/blogger for USA Weekend and USA Today, even gave away two copies of The Losers DVD to two followers who retweeted his message about the event. And, no surprise, several Browncoat groups also reposted our blog on their websites and sent out tweets to people far and wide.

Kids Need to Read would like to send a great big “Thank you!” to Scott (and his very understanding wife and kids) for helping our organization in such a fun way! We are also grateful to everyone who made a donation and/or helped to spread the word by tweeting, blogging, or posting on other social media sites. The money raised has been put to good use purchasing books for the disadvantaged children we serve. Geeks unite!

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
