Here’s the perfect blend of sci-fi and children’s literacy as Kids Need to Read Charity Auctions presents a “Terrify’n Space Monkey” autographed by author, game designer, and founder of the Kids Need to Read organization, PJ Haarsma. Our “Terrify’n Space Monkeys” were inspired by a line from the sci-fi series Firefly, starring PJ’s friend and KNTR co-founder, Nathan Fillion. Now this clever tribute to Firefly has been tweaked to honor PJ and his young adult novel series, The Softwire.
This furry charmer is 15″ high, brown and adorable. He is wearing a snazzy, black space monkey shirt beautifully embroidered with “The Softwire” on the front in a very high-tech-looking font. The back of the shirt bears a boldly embroidered “PJ”. The front of the shirt is signed by the author and includes his signature quote, “Fear Nothing”. Plus, this just wouldn’t be PJ’s monkey without a Kids Need to Read mini-button pinned to its shoulder!
Our thanks to PJ for signing this little guy and for his vision and creativity that are the cornerstone of Kids Need to Read. We’re also grateful to Marty Dwyer and Denise Gary for creating our collection of Space Monkeys!

All of Kids Need to Read‘s proceeds for February will go to support the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle, Washington. Through the Reach Out and Read © Program (ROR), the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic can give new books to children between the ages of six months through five years at each well child check. Once a child turns six, they are no longer able to provide new books through ROR and rely solely on the generous support of individuals, companies and organizations. Kids Need to Read would like to help supply books for the clinic’s older children not served by ROR. The proceeds from this auction will help Kids Need to Read, the charity project founded by author PJ Haarsma and actor Nathan Fillion, achieve that goal.
Good luck!
