Greetings KNTR Supporter!
We are regularly asked the question, “How can I help Kids Need to Read?” The fall and winter is a critical time for KNTR, because this is when we conduct the largest part of our giving. This is the time when our donations have the most effect upon the school children we serve. We do not give to schools during the spring AIMS studying and testing period. Our second most critical time comes in late spring, when we donate books to bolster under-funded public library summer programs.
Currently, we have a long waiting list of schools hoping for donations this fall and winter. We need your help to fulfill these requests. Please consider making the fall an annual time of giving to Kids Need to Read. Even $5.00 purchases one to two paperbacks for the kids. $10.00 provides a quality hardback for empty library shelves. Remember, KNTR only donates books of substantial, inspiring material. These “small” donations add up to many, many books and are greatly appreciated!
If you would like to sponsor a school, $500.00 will pay for a large donation of books to a very grateful school with no resources of their own. $1,000.00 will sponsor our ongoing health clinic support for disadvantaged children. We would love to make a large donation to a school or clinic in your name.
Donations can easily be made through PayPal or with a credit or debit card by going to our home page and clicking on the bright green “Make a Donation” button. If you prefer checks, please mail them to:

Here are some other fun, effective ways you can help support KNTR:
Are you an online shop-a-holic? If so, please consider shopping through the KNTR link on iFundDrive. It only takes a moment to register. Once registered, every time you enter through our link for your online shopping, KNTR receives a portion of the proceeds. Most of the major online retailers are a part of the program, including eBay, Best Buy, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, WalMart, Target, etc. It is amazing! If our supporters do their online Christmas shopping through the KNTR link, we will be able to give a lot of books to kids this winter! The link is always available on our home page. It is a large blue button bearing the words, “Support our FundDrive”.
Are you looking for something meaningful to give for your holiday gifting? Why not consider purchasing our 2010 wall calendar for your friends and family from our eBay store? The calendars are not only useful, they tell others that you support the cause of childhood literacy and help spread awareness for this very important mission. They are beautiful testaments to the power literacy brings to the lives of children. Every penny spent on the calendars benefits KNTR.
Are you competitive? How about helping us out with a quick vote in the Christie Cookie contest? It only takes a few minutes, but could help us in a big way. If KNTR falls into third through twelfth place, we will win $1,000. That is equal to two large school donations!!! Second place receives $5,000 and first place wins $10,000. Currently, we are in 27th place (thanks to a kind tweet from Nathan Fillion). Each email address can only vote once, but if you have more than one email account, you can place one vote under each address. The trick is to find us on the list under the word “The” as in “The Kids Need to Read Foundation”. We were forced . . . what can we say? Voting ends October 15, 2009. If you can get your friends, family and coworkers to cast some votes too, that would help a lot! And if your friend is Felicia Day or Barack Obama or some such, well then we would win it all!!!
Are you craving some Horrible Halloween fun? How about attending a great event benefiting KNTR? Whedonopolis presents their 2nd Annual Halloween Charity Screening of the Emmy Award-winning Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and The Guild, Season 2. It takes place at the Regency Fairfax Theatre in Los Angeles on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 8:00 PM. All proceeds from the event will benefit Kids Need to Read. Last year’s screening raised over $4,200 for charity and was attended by Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog creator Joss Whedon and co-writers, Jed and Zach Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, as well as several cast members, including Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. The ticket price of $20 includes a collectible, interactive Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Bag! In addition to the interactive goodie bag, there will be special commemorative items and special prizes, including random gift cards from Sideshow Collectibles, ranging from $25.00 to $100.00. There will also be special on-site drawing prizes, including autographed DVD copies of Dr. Horrible and The Guild-Season 2. Please visit Whedonopolis.com for online ticket ordering or additional information. We hope to see you there!
Thank you for being such a great supporter of Kids Need to Read and its critical mission to promote childhood literacy!
