Joss Whedon Donates $50,000 to Honor KNTR Co-founder Nathan Fillion

Kids Need to Read sincerely thanks Mr. Joss Whedon for his extremely generous gift to the organization in the amount of $50,000.  The contribution was made as a tribute to Whedon’s friend and colleague, KNTR co-founder Nathan Fillion. Mr. Whedon is a writer, director, and producer of many popular television and film productions, including The Avengers, Firefly, Serenity, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Nathan Fillion has starred in several of Mr. Whedon’s productions.

The majority of the children Kids Need to Read serves live under extremely challenging circumstances. We know that books can be used as incredibly effective tools to help lead these children to enrich their lives, envision a vibrant future, and accomplish their goals. Contributors make it possible for Kids Need to Read to provide multitudes of books to children seeking hope and inspiration, as well as educational information to parents who are unaware of the impact reading together has on their children’s future success. The result is invaluable!

Mr. Whedon’s beneficence will assist Kids Need to Read beyond measure, enabling the organization to expand in order to inspire more children and adolescents “to value the written word,” as stated by one of the educators with whom we have worked closely. How wonderful that it should come from such a supremely gifted writer—and one so intimately connected to Kids Need to Read’s “Browncoat” roots! In fact, you could say that Kids Need to Read is a legacy of Mr. Whedon’s work, as it was organized and nurtured by hardworking Firefly fans possessing a passion to help others.

Kids Need to Read is exceedingly grateful to Mr. Whedon, as well as Mr. Fillion, for contributing to the long-term success of disadvantaged children through their support of Kids Need to Read and its programs designed to assist children through literacy. We invite other like-minded individuals who “value the written word” to join us in our cause.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
