KNTR Welcomes Author Janette Rallison to Advisory Council

Janette Rallison

Kids Need to Read is honored to welcome author Janette Rallison to the foundation’s Advisory Council, where she joins author PJ Haarsma, actor Nathan Fillion, writer Margaret Bostrom, author/illustrator Jackie Morris, and author/illustrator James A. Owen, as well as two additional new council members, author Tom Leveen and author/illustrator Steven Riley. Janette Rallison (who is also sometimes CJ Hill when the mood strikes her) is the award winning author of twelve young adult novels which have sold over a million copies. Her books have also been on the IRA Young Adults’ Choices lists, Popular Picks, and many state reading lists. Most of her books are romantic comedies because hey, there is enough angst in real life, but there’s a drastic shortage of both humor and romance. In her blog, Janette discusses the funny side of being a YA author. She lives in Arizona with her husband, five kids, and enough cats to classify her as eccentric.

Janette has supported Kids Need to Read through several fundraising events. She recently organized an auction of “Literary Immortality” to benefit Kids Need to Read, featuring several critically acclaimed, bestselling authors. The winning bidders will have a character named after them in an upcoming young adult novel by the following participating authors: Robin Brande (Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature; Doggirl), Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush; Crescendo), Shannon Hale (Princess Academy, The Goose Girl), Brandon Mull (Fablehaven, Beyonders), Janette Rallison (My Unfair Godmother, Slayers), and Kiersten White (Paranormalcy, Supernaturally).

Janette also participated in the Kids Need to Read HIKRZ Jamboree, a celebration of literacy and the outdoors that took place at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa, Arizona. Dressed as a fairy in honor of her book, My Fair Godmother, she and her daughter conducted fairy face painting for happy kids attending the Jamboree.

Continuing with the fairy theme, Janette also participated in author readings at the 2010 Phoenix Faerie Festival. Book sales from the readings benefited Kids Need to Read.

In addition to supporting Kids Need to Read’s cause, Janette has been great fun, too, attending the grand opening of KNTR’s first office and gleefully participating in ornament “thievery” during the organization’s holiday parties.

Please join us in welcoming Janette Rallison to the KNTR Advisory Council.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
