Book Donation Application

Kids Need to Read provides books, periodicals, and literacy resources to schools, libraries, and other organizations that administer literacy programs to children and adolescents. A school, library, or organization receiving books from Kids Need to Read must be a governmental institution or 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization located in the United States or its territories. These organizations must serve at least 50% of children living at or below the national poverty rate. Please fill in all of the required information listed below. Answer all questions completely. Kids Need to Read only accepts online applications.

Kids Need to Read places a heavy emphasis on assisting disadvantaged children. Because our foundation serves children of all ages, we encourage submissions from literacy programs that focus on middle readers and young adults. Stressed populations, such as juvenile offenders, children and adolescents living in impoverished communities, and youth faced with learning challenges experience extremely elevated drop-out rates due to illiteracy, yet they are often overlooked by literacy intervention programs. It is our intent to assist educators who are devoted to helping such children overcome the odds and succeed through worthwhile literacy programs.

Each Kids Need to Read book grant will be accompanied by a list of fun, age-appropriate activities that promote both literacy and social responsibility. Kids Need to Read requires the completion of at least one of the suggested activities in order to assure that our books are being used to impact the children we are serving. Kids Need to Read also requires a completed program performance evaluation within six months of receipt of a book grant to help us gauge the impact of our books and activities.

Note: Because of the great demand for books by schools, libraries, and other literacy programs, Kids Need to Read rarely provides books to projects that give the donated books away. Kids Need to Read places priority on organizations that retain the books and use them as part of their literacy programs.

I further certify that we have a literacy program in place to make good use of Kids Need to Read’s book donation. I understand that these books constitute a charitable contribution and may not, under any circumstances, be sold or distributed to the financial benefit of any individual or organization. I further understand that Kids Need to Read allocates book donations based on criteria including: (1) the capacity of the potential recipient to make donated books available to children; (2) the extent to which receipt of a donation would fulfill an educational need of the organization; (3) the organization's level of funding (with preference afforded to underfunded organizations); and (4) the requirement that any organization that receives a donation be a public library, public school, other governmental entity, or a nonprofit organization that has established exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). I acknowledge that I am expected to complete a program performance evaluation within six months of receipt of a book grant to help Kids Need to Read gauge the impact of the books and activities it provides.
