Kids Need to Read is excited to be a part of Browncoats: Redemption, an independent fan film project based in Joss Whedon’s Serenity/Firefly ‘verse. All proceeds earned from the sales of DVDs of this film will be donated equally to the various “Big Damn Hero” charities, including Kids Need to Read.

Michael Dougherty, co-founder of Big Damn Fan Films (along with Steven Fisher) said of the film project:

Joss and the cast have done a great job for us and we really want to give something back as a “thank you” to them through our charitable donations. We’re looking to make sure that Firefly/Serenity, and the charities that the cast are involved in, stay fresh in the minds of the Browncoats and those who are still just learning about the series. We know Joss and the crew have in their hearts the desire to bring the crew of Serenity back when the time is right, but we Firefly fans are hungry for more. We are aware that there have been many fan films made for other sci-fi genres, and there has been an attempt or two at creating films set in the Serenity/Firefly universe, but to our knowledge no one has leveraged this medium to provide a great source of donations for charities.

Much of the costly supplies and production expenses are being donated to the project so that as much money as possible can be donated to the various charities involved. Take a look at the treatment and ship sketches at the Browncoats: Redemption website. Not only will this be fun for all fans of the ‘verse, but it will exemplify the giving nature of the Browncoat community. If you crave more stories of the Independents and would like to spread a little good in the ‘verse despite the Alliance, be sure to support this creative and charitable endeavor by your fellow ‘coats.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
