Presenting the Kids Need to Read 2012 Calendar Cover Art

Written by Denise Gary

As we get ready to send the Kids Need to Read 2012 wall calendar off to be printed, we proudly present the cover art for all to enjoy.  Every piece of art we received from each of our twelve calendar artists was thought provoking and beautiful.  Each artist was instructed to incorporate a book or books into their illustration to highlight our mission.  What we received was art unbelievably varied and imaginative.

BookMoBot by Eisner nominated artist Nathan Hale was chosen to represent the fine artistry that is to be displayed within the Kids Need to Read calendar.  Nathan’s creation epitomizes our mission to bring desperately needed books to children in locations where there are few.  It evokes the excitement books brought to our lives in the old days of the bookmobile, but with a perfect, futuristic twist for our children.  This represents Kids Need to Read very well, as our organization always strives to give contemporary books of utmost interest to today’s youth.

We are looking forward to revealing more of the calendar art in the upcoming months, as we have a treasure-trove of awe-inspiring art given to us by the generous artists who participated in the calendar project.  The pieces are all of equal inspiration and so very beautiful, but each is unique and fascinating.  In fact, so wonderful is the collection that the possibility of conducting an art show and auction now presents itself.

In addition to the calendar, KNTR will be producing note cards from all twelve pieces of art.  The calendar and note cards will be available for purchase in mid-2011, with all proceeds benefiting Kids Need to Read.  Please read more details about our upcoming calendar, as well as view a listing of our contributing artists and sponsors on our 2012 calendar web page.

We thank all of our “Kids Need to Read artists” for honoring our foundation with their valuable time and talent.  The gifts they have given to us illustrate their belief in our dedication to the cause of childhood literacy.  We are also immensely grateful to our calendar sponsors, whose generosity ensures that all funds generated by the calendar sales will be used to further our mission.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
