Kids Need to Read welcomes KaaVonia Hinton-Johnson to the Board of Directors.

Dr. Hinton-Johnson is an assistant professor in Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.  She earned a bachelor of science degree in English education and a masters of art degree in both African American and English literature from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Her doctorate in English education was earned in 2003 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  Hinton-Johnson’s scholarship focuses on literacy materials created specifically for blacks; literature for adults, children and young adults, especially works labeled multicultural; critical biographies of black writers; and literary criticism.  Her work has been published in Social Education, MultiCultural Review, Journal of Children’s Literature, and English Journal.  She has also contributed to encyclopedias such as the Encyclopedia of African American Literature, Encyclopedia of Ethnic American Literature, and Feminist Encyclopedia of African American Literature. Her reviews of young adult and children’s literature are found regularly in Kliatt, VOYA, and ForeWord Magazine.

Dr. Hinton-Johnson is also the author of Angela Johnson: Poetic Prose (Scarecrow Press, 2006) and Sharon M. Draper: Embracing Literacy (Scarecrow Press, 2009).  She is the co-author (with Gail K. Dickinson) of Integrating Multicultural Literature in Libraries and Classrooms in Secondary Schools (Linworth, 2007), and (with Katherine T. Bucher) of Young Adult Literature: Exploration, Evaluation, and Appreciation (Prentice Hall, 2009).

Kids Need to Read is excited to have KaaVonia Hinton-Johnson join in our efforts to bring a culture of reading to under-served children.
