Nov. 17 – Kids Need to Read Donates to 12 Libraries

Kids Need to Read is happy to announce its second major donation of books to 12 libraries! We are extremely excited about this donation because it includes the only five surviving branches of the New Orleans Public Library.

Patrick O’Brien, from Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, told KNTR that eight of their 13 public libraries were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. They are thrilled to be able to receive new books for the five open libraries. They have no funding for new books, beyond what the Friends raise for them. All funds go toward rebuilding the destroyed libraries. They have received many book donations, but could not use most of them due to their bad condition. They had to sell them in a book drive, but were able to use that money for some new books. Mr. O’Brien was very excited when he realized we were giving new books and covered no less!

The following libraries were also provided books to help foster the imaginations of their young readers:

Cathedral School Library
Portland, ME

Eudora West Elementary Library
Eudora, KS

Eudora Middle School Library
Eudora, KS

Martin Luther King Memorial Library
(group donation for multiple area libraries)
Washington, DC

Beers Street School Library
Hazlet, NJ

Lake County Library System
Tavares, FL

Nelson County Public Library
Bardstown, KY

KNTR would like to extend a big thank you to Faith from Changing Hands bookstore. At the recent Kidslitosphere conference in Chicago, Changing Hands held a raffle for packages of books, the proceeds of which went to KNTR. Faith sold more than 130 tickets raising a total of $174 for KNTR!

One of the raffle winners graciously donated their package to KNTR to add to our donation of books for the libraries in New Orleans. The package included: Downham’s Before I Die; Benz and Lewis’ ARC of The Fall of the Templar; Benz and Lewis’ The Revenge of the Shadow King; Owens ARC of The Search of The Red Dragon and McKinley’s Dragonhaven. The winner kept her copy of The Softwire!

KNTR is thrilled to be putting your generous donations to good work. We have donated books to more than 25 libraries. Thanks to your kindness and generosity we are making a difference for libraries that need a helping hand. If you know of a school or library that could benefit from our program, please tell them about Kids Need to Read. We want to help.

Tis the Season

Once Upon a Time… It was a dark and stormy night… This is the tale that was told to me…: Throughout history, winter has been a season rich in the tradition of storytelling, serving as a captivating blend of entertainment and education for individuals of all ages. This enduring legacy is exemplified in Beowulf, one of the oldest recorded stories, where the narrative opens with a compelling command, “Listen! we have heard of the might of the kings,”. No matter the opening line, the timeless power and importance of story and literacy is in its ability to connect generations and communities through the ages.
